I have been leading an ongoing art writing workshop series with the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA), Derry~Londonderry titled ‘Should Artists Write?’ since September 2020.
Initially a suggestion from curator
and writer Maeve Mulrennan, the material for the series developed across the lockdown period as I considered the pros and cons of what can feel like a niche, transdisciplinary practice.
The series has since evolved into a discursive space where artists gather to speak about the role of writing in their practice. Together, we discuss everything from the text's ‘art status’ to the expanding field of criticism, and the more direct matter of getting words out of your head and on to a page.
